Specs at a Glance

For over two decades, the Subaru Outback has been a popular choice for its durability, capability both on and off-road, and top-notch safety technology. The 2021 Outback is even better than the year before, with some changes that affect all trims, starting with the base model.

Now, the Outback comes standard with a seat-belt reminder in the back to alert the driver and front-seat passenger of children or pets left in the back when the car is turned off. LED headlights are now added as an advanced safety aid as well. The Outback comes with the same trim level options in 2021, which includes many good options. If you are looking for more amenities beyond what the base Outback offers, the Touring XT, which tops the line, provides a long list of features and amenities.

Performance

All-wheel drive is standard with the base model of the Outback and the Touring XT. The base trim's engine is a 2.5L with four cylinders. This engine's total power output is 182 HP, and its maximum torque is 176 LB-FT. An automatic transmission is standard at the base level. The Touring XT upgrades to a more powerful engine with a turbocharger. The Touring's engine is a 2.4L with four cylinders as well, but its power capacity increases to 260 HP, and you'll get up to 277 LB-FT in torque. All-wheel drive also comes with the Touring XT, but this trim has a more advanced version with multiple drive select modes.

Appearance

An athletic appearance is the overall theme of the base Outback and the Touring XT. With the base model comes standard raised roof rails, high wheel arches, and 8.7 inches in ground clearance. LED headlights are also standard for this year. The Touring XT gets a sunroof, a hands-free power liftgate, and 18-inch wheels. Unique exterior accents help distinguish the Touring XT from other trims in the lineup.

Features

At the base level, the 2021 Subaru Outback has an infotainment system with a seven-inch display screen. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard features with this year's Outback, and it also has smartphone integration. Lane-keep assist, forward collision mitigation, and adaptive cruise control are standard safety amenities. A larger 11.6-inch display system comes with the Touring XT trim level and upgraded upholstery to premium leather. A navigation system is added to the top trim level's infotainment system.
