New reports making their way around the industry suggest Subaru could be planning to debut an all-electric CUV on the U.S. market by 2021. If true, the midsize, all-wheel-drive vehicle could make quite the splash in the EV segment and take aim at leading electric models in the growing category.

Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun was the first to report about Subaru’s plans to release an all-electric CUV. According to the source, the model will likely be based on the popular Outback or Forester and sit on a brand-new platform. No other information was revealed about the crossover, considering it’s early in the development process, but we do hope to receive further details in the near future.

With the number of zero-emission vehicles on the market continuing to grow, it makes sense as to why Subaru would want to jump into the game. Emissions regulations are also becoming stricter as each year passes, leading to a need for more eco-friendly cars, trucks and SUVs. As of now, the automaker already sells the Crosstrek Hybrid in the U.S., so an all-electric CUV would be the perfect addition.

More information about the new Subaru CUV will be added to our blog as it’s released. Check back in the future for details.
