One unlucky camper out in Jefferson County, Colorado, discovered what happens when you don’t securely lock your vehicle when out in the wilderness. A bear managed to find a way into her Subaru Outback and trapped itself in the car, which prompted a couple local police officers to come to its rescue.
Filming the entire incident, Deputies Josh Tillman and McLaughlin approached the car, which had become home to a medium-sized bear. In the video, you can hear one officer say it didn’t look like any windows were broken, making it initially unclear just how the bear was able to get inside the vehicle. Regardless, the bear needed rescuing, and with a pop of the hatch, the officers freed the stressed animal which quickly made a run for it.
According to a local news station, the owner of the car, Annie Bruecke, later admitted she had left the doors unlocked and was shocked to find out a bear had figured out how to get inside. As you can see in the video above, the bear made quite the mess while it was trapped in the Outback, tearing up everything in sight in an attempt to free itself.
Note to campers nationwide: Never forget to lock your car doors or … you many just find a furry friend inside.
