An anonymous source working at Subaru recently told Car and Driver magazine that the automaker could wind up releasing a mid-engine, hybrid sport coupe within the next few years. With rumors swirling about Subaru’s interest in developing more hybrid cars in the future, there’s a good chance this latest news could prove true, which is sure to excite loyal Subaru enthusiasts around the globe.
As of now, it’s being said that Subaru is currently testing a prototype powertrain in the BRZ at their facility in Japan. It’s likely the powertrain will hit the market in a two-door sports coupe, but the anonymous source suggests a sports crossover/CUV is also on the table. When the coupe or crossover is unveiled to the public, it’s expected to be built on the new Subaru Global Platform, feature a mid-mounted 1.6L turbocharged boxer engine with hybrid assist and come with two electric motors. Additionally, an all-wheel drivetrain will be used on the model and it will be able to churn out a combined 330 horsepower with ease.
Aside from this information, no other details have been shared about the potential mid-engine, hybrid vehicle. We look forward to receive official word from Subaru about the rumors, but in the meantime, we invite you to come check out our current collection of 2016 Subaru models at Van Subaru.
