Subaru is a Japanese automaker renowned for its adventure-ready vehicles, featuring Subaru's own all-wheel drive and advanced safety technology. By 2017, Subaru had become one of the largest automakers globally, with its vehicles being among the most popular worldwide.

Subaru's History

Subaru's origins date back to 1915 when it was initially called the Aircraft Research Laboratory. In 1932, the company was renamed Nakajima Aircraft Company, focusing on producing aircraft for Japan during WWII. After the war, the company diversified into other forms of transportation, including scooters. Subaru began vehicle production in the early 1950s, with the first model being the Subaru 1500, produced in limited quantities. This was followed by models like the 360, 1000, and Sambar. During this expansion, Subaru developed key technologies for its vehicles, such as its proprietary symmetrical all-wheel drive and signature boxer engine, both of which are still featured in Subaru cars today.

Subaru's First Awards

By the 1970s, Subaru's vehicles began receiving accolades. In 1975, the Subaru GF was named "1975 Import Car of the Year" by Road Test magazine. Three years later, the Subaru DL was nominated for "1978 Import Car of the Year" by Motor Trend. During this decade, Subaru also introduced Japan's first front-wheel drive vehicle, the FF1, and the Subaru 4WD wagon, the first passenger vehicle with four-wheel drive sold in the U.S.

Subaru Adds Class

For its first several decades, Subaru focused on producing practical and somewhat sporty vehicles. However, in the 1980s, Subaru began manufacturing more upscale and luxurious cars. The Subaru Legacy, one of its most popular models, was its first car to feature luxury components, helping Subaru establish itself as a more upscale automaker. In the 1990s, Subaru furthered this image with its first luxury coupe, the SVX, blending luxury with sporty and athletic qualities.

The Outback Appears

In the 1990s, Subaru introduced the Outback, which remains one of its best-selling models. Over the years, the Subaru Outback has undergone numerous updates and improvements, yet it continues to be a standout as a versatile sport utility wagon.
